Field Report: Grounding the Heartland Trilogy

Updated: 2 days ago

As the editor of Tinge World, I am pleased to share a unique update on the production of the Heartland trilogy.

reimagining of the moment when Jones shared a mango with a wild monkey at her home in Thailand

While the narrative foundations of the series are firmly established, author Stephannie Jones is moving into a phase of deep-site immersion to ensure the scaffolding of her storytelling carries the weight of true Dutch authenticity. To capture the specific resonance of the Veluwe, she will be on location in the Netherlands from April 24 to November 20, residing at Stal 't Lage Veld, a traditional camping farm.

The Heartland Strategy: From Research to Reality

This residency is a critical component of Jones’s "Heartland Strategy." Having spent extensive time in the rugged wilds of the Appalachian Mountains and the dense ecosystems of Kaeng Krachan National Park, she is now turning her focus to the "silent cathedrals" of the Dutch interior.

This period of exploration serves several professional functions:

  • Sentient Character

Development: Immersion in the Dutch landscape is essential for grounding the roles of Bram, a Dutch draft horse, and Grijper, a highly intelligent raccoon, both of whom serve as vital co-collaborators in the series.

  • Atmospheric Calibration: Staying at Stal 't Lage Veld allows Jones to absorb the seasonal changes of the Veluwezoom, the specific scents of pine resin and the tactile chill of the morning frost that define the Heartland where the story’s protagonists reside.

  • Cinematic Scouting: In line with the project’s long-term growth, Jones is actively scouting locations for a future indie movie adaptation, ensuring the visual "terroir" of the Netherlands is captured accurately for the screen.

This residency is a continuation of a career defined by boots-on-the-ground exploration. Having navigated the rugged wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina and lived in a traditional village house at the edge of the Thai jungle, where she befriended wild monkeys, Jones brings a deep history of nature-based research to the Dutch interior. This personal experience with primates in the wild serves as a primary inspiration for her narrative, as she looks to incorporate the primates of Apenheul into her storytelling, ensuring the 'Heartland' feels as living and authentic as the landscapes she has explored across the globe.

Professional Production & Logistics

This on-location research is not merely a creative retreat; it is a structured production activity. By establishing a physical presence in the heartland, the project is generating the necessary intellectual property and cultural assets to meet its 2027 publication goals. This period of "boots-on-the-ground" exploration ensures that every narrative data-point, from the abandoned shipyards of Rotterdam to the subterranean bunkers of the O&I, is backed by real-world observation.

Stay tuned as Tinge World continues to monitor this strategic expansion into the heart of the Netherlands.
